How to Clear Up Brain Fog

--Cheryl Harris, MS, NBC-HWC

If you have ever felt tired for no reason, moody for no reason, or achy for no reason, you might be dealing with chronic inflammation. It is one of the most common and sneaky drivers of fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, low mood, and chronic disease. And the tricky part? Most people have no idea it is happening. Unlike acute inflammation, which is your body’s helpful, short-term response to things like a cut or a virus, chronic low-grade inflammation is like a slow-burning fire that keeps smoldering in the background, quietly wearing you down over time. It can speed up aging, weaken your immune system, and raise your risk for everything from heart disease and autoimmune conditions to memory problems and burnout. Fun, right?

How to Clear Up Brain Fog

In functional medicine, we do not just throw a cold compress on the fire, we ask, “What’s fueling it?” Then we work to put the flames out gently, consistently, and naturally. As a National Board Certified Health Coach trained in functional medicine, I help clients turn the tide on inflammation with five simple (but powerful) daily habits. First, eat more anti-inflammatory foods, such as leafy greens, berries, extra-virgin olive oil, and wild-caught fish, and limit your intake of ultra-processed foods. Your gut and your joints will thank you. Second, balance your blood sugar by building meals with protein, healthy fats, and fiber, because that afternoon crash is not just annoying, it is also inflammatory. Third, get quality sleep, and I mean —7–9 hours of real, restful sleep, not just lying in bed scrolling and calling it recovery. Fourth, move your body gently and regularly, walk, stretch, do yoga, even dance in your kitchen. It does not have to be intense, just consistent. And fifth, manage your stress like your health depends on it, because it does. Try breathwork, journaling, a walk outside, or five minutes of doing absolutely nothing without guilt (a revolutionary act, I know).

These habits are not trendy hacks; they are foundational. They do not just mask symptoms; they help your body heal at the root. And when you start stacking these small, daily wins, inflammation starts to lose its grip. You start to feel clearer, stronger, and lighter, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. So, if you are ready to stop feeling like you’re dragging yourself through the day and start feeling like yourself again, your body’s probably been waiting for you to address the inflammation that has been quietly running the show. And the good news? It is fixable, and you do not have to do it alone.
